In Sanskrit, "Agni" means fire in both earthly and mythological terms and is an important deity in Vedic mythology. Fire symbolizes light and shadow, creation and destruction. There is light and darkness all around us - it is up to us to change things for the best.

In Ashley Lobo's choreography, the dancers go on a journey of discovery. They explore the concept of "Agni" in its many manifestations and take the audience on their very own journey of "fire". Those who watch are meant to have an inner experience, to feel the "fire".

Agni" was inspired by the Godhra massacre. A bloody conflict between radical Hindus and Muslims, unresolved despite numerous attempts and commissions.

The Navdhara India Dance Theatre is a purely contemporary ballet company and is based just outside Mumbai. The company was founded by its artistic director and resident choreographer Asley Lobo. The style of his company consists of a combination of western dance styles with the spirituality of Indian philosophy. Navdhara India Dance Theatre also allows itself to incorporate newer methods and works from theater and dance.
