New light rail line Bonn - Niederkassel - Cologne

The new Bonn - Niederkassel - Cologne light rail line will finally connect the Niederkassel districts on the Rhine with Bonn and Cologne via a single line. At Langel, the light rail line towards Wesseling and Godorf will cross the Rhine on a new bridge.

In future, light rail will run from Bonn via Niederkassel to Cologne on the right bank of the Rhine.

The new light rail line significantly strengthens the connection between Bonn and the Rhein-Sieg district and will offer an important alternative to the car for many commuters in the future. The light rail line via Niederkassel follows the example of lines 16 and 18 (Rheinuferbahn and Vorgebirgsbahn), which connect many places on the left bank of the Rhine with Bonn and Cologne by rail.

Niederkassel, the town to be crossed by the new railroad, is currently the largest town in the Rhine-Sieg transport network that does not yet have a rail connection. To this end, the existing Rhein-Sieg-Verkehrsgesellschaft mbH (RSVG) railroad line between Mondorf and Lülsdorf is to be converted for light rail operation and connected to the Cologne and Bonn light rail network via three new gaps.

Both a new Rhine bridge and a connection to light rail line 7 on the right bank of the Rhine are planned for integration into the Cologne network.

In Bonn, the planned route will branch off from the existing line 66 from the intersection of Sankt Augustiner Straße/Niederkasseler Straße via Niederkasseler Straße to the city limits on the River Sieg.

The total length of the new sections to be covered is approx. 21.3 kilometers. In addition, the new line can also connect the south of Cologne on the left and right bank of the Rhine, as it is to be linked to line 7 of the Kölner Verkehrsbetriebe (KVB).

As an important milestone for the project, the Rhein-Sieg district received a grant of around 5.2 million euros from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia in mid-January for planning services. In addition to the City of Bonn, the Rhein-Sieg district with the district towns of Niederkassel and Troisdorf as well as the city of Cologne are involved in the project.

2023: Information event and public participation

In order to present this extensive project in more detail, the City of Cologne's Mobility Department and its project partners organized a first digital information evening in March 2023. At the online information event, the plans were explained and questions that participants asked online via a chat were answered.

The content and answers to questions during the event are published here at  www.bonn-macht-mit.de (opens in a new tab).

In April 2023, Bonn's citizens were also able to enter into dialog with the city administration on Bonn-macht-mit and make suggestions or ask questions about the planned project.
