A cable car in Bonn - already planned in the 1950s, now reborn as an idea. The reason is a serious traffic problem. The Venusberg is booming. Residents, employees, students, patients and visitors to the University Hospital (UKB) generate considerable traffic. The only two access roads for motor traffic are under heavy load, parking spaces are scarce and the infrastructural capacities are no longer sufficient.

This prompted the city to look for a solution for the Venusberg. The result: the "cable car project". As part of the traffic turnaround, the planners thought ahead and included the entire urban area.

As a result, the planned cable car will also hover over the Rhine and connect districts on the right bank of the Rhine with the Bundesviertel and Venusberg. The new means of transport is optimally linked to the existing public transport system.

The cable car has many advantages for Bonn and its residents:

• The cable car is a safe, attractive means of transportation and is ideally linked to the bus and rail network on both sides of the Rhine.
• The cable car crosses the river, rails and roads and the slope of the Venusberg without complex and cost-intensive infrastructure projects such as tunnels or bridges.
• Liveable city: 12.4 million car kilometers can be saved by the cable car. This leads to better air quality and less noise.
• The cable car connects the areas to the right of the Rhine, the Bundesviertel and the Venusberg without any detours. This halves the travel time for public transport passengers for the entire route - a benefit for the entire area south of the city center, with thousands of jobs and commuters.
• No waiting time: passengers can board the next cabin at any station every 20 to 40 seconds.
• On the right bank of the Rhine, the cable car ends at the future S 13 stop "Schießbergweg/Ramersdorf". With the extension of the S 13 from Troisdorf to Bonn-Oberkassel, the cable car will be connected to Cologne/Bonn Airport via the S-Bahn network.
• Wheelchairs, baby carriages, rollators and bicycles will be able to float along - the gondolas and stations will be barrier-free and offer all passengers a great deal of comfort. And dogs are also allowed on board.
• Inexpensive tickets: A cable car as part of local public transport means inexpensive cable car rides. Job tickets, monthly tickets, school tickets and all other public transport tickets are also valid on the cable car.
• An attraction for Bonn residents and tourists alike: The ride offers wonderful views over the Rhine, city and Siebengebirge mountains. In addition, leisure destinations on the Rhine and on the heights, such as the Waldau, are easier to reach.

Many other cities have already recognized the potential of urban cable cars - for local public transport and for the cityscape as a whole. The technology is tried and tested and, according to surveys, people love their cable cars.

The largest urban cable car network is located in La Paz, the Bolivian capital and Bonn's project partner city, with 30 kilometers of track and 10 lines. But Barcelona and London have also integrated cable cars into their public transportation systems.

The cable car in Berlin, which was built for the Federal Garden Show, is easily comparable with Bonn in terms of cable car technology: the stations and size of the cabins would also be suitable for Bonn. There are also plans to integrate the cable car into public transport in Berlin.

In spring 2022, an internationally renowned flower and garden exhibition, Floriade Expo 2022, was launched in Almere in the Netherlands. Here, too, a cable car system - similar to the one planned for Bonn - connected the various attractions.
