The Bonn City Council adopted the first municipal sustainability strategy at the beginning of February 2019. This strategy is Bonn's contribution to the systematic implementation of the United Nations 2030 Agenda with its 17 Sustainable Development Goals. The strategy was developed over two years in close consultation with representatives from politics, civil society, science and business. This was followed by a political consultation process lasting several months, in which twelve specialist committees were involved in line with the comprehensive relevance of the strategy.
Systematic agenda with existing concepts and new projects
True to the motto: "A goal without a plan is just a wish", the strategy supplements existing concepts and council resolutions with current and planned projects and brings them together to form a systematic agenda for sustainable urban development, which sets out a binding direction for the coming years with the council resolution. In the strategy, the 17 goals have been transferred to six municipal fields of action, including subject areas that have not previously been explicitly considered in the context of sustainability.
The six subject areas are
- Mobility
- Climate and energy
- Work and economy
- Natural resources and the environment
- Social participation and gender equality
- Global responsibility and one world
The scope of the strategy is broad
The strategy covers a broad spectrum: The expansion of the city's biodiversity strategy, the energy-efficient refurbishment of existing buildings, the expansion of renewable energies, the increased promotion of mixed building types in new construction projects or the increasing use of organic products in the city's communal catering are listed, as are action days on family-conscious personnel policy, the formation of a new "sustainability" network with 200 to 300 companies, or the strengthening of citizen participation.
The strategy also includes promoting the participation of migrants, testing a "part-time management" model in the city administration and the participatory updating of the disability policy participation plan.
In the area of mobility, the expansion of public transport is planned through new connection points and lines. Cycling is to be strengthened by setting up mobile stations, closing gaps in the cycle route network and expanding high-speed cycle paths, among other things. An infrastructure is to be developed for the delivery of goods in the city center that provides for the use of e-cargo bikes and e-commercial vehicles.
Global responsibility in Bonn is to be further strengthened through a concept for "sustainability in sport" involving the clubs and the procurement of sports equipment from fair production. The number of fair trade schools is also to be increased, fair daycare centers established, fair municipal procurement expanded and municipal project partnerships with cities from other continents further intensified.
