City of Bonn

Education for sustainable development

The United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development from 2005 to 2014 has mobilized a wide range of commitment in Bonn. The city has received several awards as a Decade City.

Helmut Wiesner, Head of the Environment Department, and Heike Hückesfeld, Director of Haus der Natur, are delighted to receive ESD certification in March 2023.

The City of Bonn and many institutions and initiatives in the city are also actively involved in the current Global Action Program that followed the Decade. The aim of the Global Action Program is to anchor the principle of sustainability in people's minds and, above all, permanently in the structures of the educational landscape.

In November 2018, the city of Bonn was once again recognized as a municipality for its commitment to this structural anchoring of ESD. In March 2023, the Haus der Natur in Bonn received the certification "Institution for Education for Sustainable Development (ESD)".

Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) refers to educational programs that enable people to understand the impact of their own actions on the world and to make responsible decisions. This educational concept is an essential tool for implementing the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). True to the motto of the United Nations in Bonn "Shaping a sustainable future", ESD is therefore also firmly anchored in Bonn's sustainability strategy.

The Office for International Affairs and Global Sustainability coordinates the city-wide ESD work and implements measures mainly in the context of international project partnerships, development education and public relations work and local SDG work.

The most important ESD actors in the city include

  • the Office for Local Sustainability and the House of Nature in the Office for the Environment and Urban Greenery
  • the Integration Staff Unit/Communal Integration Center,
  • the Adult Education Center.

All municipal actors cooperate with groups and activists from civil society and the general public.
