Citizens have the opportunity to submit purchased food, cosmetics and consumer goods (everyday items such as household items, clothing, toys) to their local food inspection office for assessment if they suspect that they do not meet legitimate consumer expectations.

Reasons for a complaint may exist, for example, if a food product smells or tastes atypical, is obviously spoiled, has caused physical discomfort or has labeling defects.

Defective goods can of course be complained about in the store itself.

If you decide to submit what you consider to be defective goods for assessment, you should note the following points:

• The origin and date of purchase of the goods should be known. If the goods were not purchased in Bonn, please contact the food inspection office responsible for the place of purchase. The addresses can be obtained from the respective city administration by telephone or on their website.
• The product and packaging and, if available, the receipt can be handed in directly at Engeltalstr. 4, Food Inspection Department.
• If available, please also bring a second, originally sealed copy of the product to be tested as a comparative sample.
• The purchase price for the submitted product cannot be refunded. Nor can the Office assert claims for damages against the retailer on your behalf.
• Samples that are to be examined for private interest cannot be accepted.

The complainant will be informed of the result of the investigation. If the defect complained about is found to be a violation of food law, the food inspection authority will take all necessary further measures (e.g. inspection of the responsible business, taking and testing of official samples, informing the food inspection authority responsible for the retailer).

As the inspection of dubious products purchased in the trade is of general interest, the inspection and assessment is carried out free of charge.
