City of Bonn

Kherson

Since February 2023, the city of Bonn has maintained a solidarity partnership with the southern Ukrainian city of Kherson.

Mayor Katja Dörner and Vitalii Bielobrov, Deputy Mayor of Kherson, at the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding for further and more intensive cooperation within the framework of the solidarity partnership with Kherson.

Against the backdrop of the Russian war of aggression, the city of Bonn is supporting the severely affected southern Ukrainian city of Kherson as part of a solidarity partnership. In addition to regular exchanges, the focus is on the donation of municipal vehicles, the "Bonn helps Kherson" donation project, an operator partnership between BonnNetz and the Kherson water supplier Chersonvodokanal and cultural events. The solidarity partnership between Bonn and Kherson is also backed by broad support from the city's society.

The southern Ukrainian city of Kherson was subjected to heavy fighting right at the start of Russia's war of aggression and was captured by the Russian military in March 2022. Thousands of people fled Kherson as a result. In September 2022, the Ukrainian military launched a counter-offensive - and succeeded in liberating the city from Russian occupation. The Russian attack led to severe destruction of infrastructure such as schools, kindergartens, hospitals and energy supplies. Kherson is currently under military administration. Due to its close proximity to the front, the city suffers from daily shelling. Of the original population of around 290,000 in 2021, around 90,000 still live in Kherson.
