Station 7: Riverbank

Up close and personal with Gevatter Rhein

River bank with young poplars.

Although the banks of the Rhine are heavily influenced by humans through shipping traffic, recreational use and bank reinforcement, they are nevertheless an important habitat for a number of animal and plant species. In addition to typical riverside shrubs such as willows and poplars, various fast-growing herbs have colonized the river gravel, some of which lie dry for long periods in summer. These include many exotic plants whose seeds have been washed up by the water - it's worth taking a closer look during a walk!

We need to be aware of the problems caused by today's global shipping traffic: various mussel and fish species have now arrived here by this route - so-called invasive species that compete with our native species for habitat and resources and may displace them.
