In order to build a new cemetery, the civil parish acquired a plot of land on Schmittgasser Kirchweg in 1938. During the war, many German soldiers lost their lives in Duisdorf and were buried in the cemetery. In addition, there were the victims of air raids and the Russians, Italians and Poles who died in captivity in the camps on the Hardthöhe. A larger memorial was erected for the Russian soldiers. The Italian soldiers were relocated to Italy. The war graves and memorials in the cemetery therefore take up more space than in other cemeteries of a comparable size.

After the Second World War, the local council decided to build a mortuary, which was inaugurated in 1951. A cold store was added at the end of the 1960s. Due to the high groundwater level, the entire cemetery was extensively drained. The cemetery was repeatedly extended, the last time in 1987. The cemetery is a formal site with well-grown trees, some of which are old.
Prof. Dr. Klara Marie Fassbinder is a well-known personality who is buried in the cemetery. She was a committed pacifist who lived from 1890 to 1974. She had a doctorate in Romance studies and was very courageous, which led to conflicts with National Socialism and thus to her dismissal. Even after the Second World War, in addition to her professorship in history, she campaigned for international understanding and peace in the world.
