City of Bonn

Fair Trade Town

Bonn has been a Fair Trade Town since 2010. This makes the federal city one of around 2,000 cities worldwide that have been recognized for their special commitment to fair trade.

What all Fair Trade Towns have in common is that a certain number of stores, restaurants, cafés, schools, clubs and churches, depending on the size of the town, offer fairly traded products. In addition, coffee and another Fair Trade product must be used at committee meetings, council meetings and in the mayor's office.

The commitment of the city and the civil society actors involved is diverse. The nationwide Fair Trade Week is also a highlight of activities in Bonn to make fair trade more visible and better known. The city of Bonn publishes an annual program of events.

A larger event has been held on Bonn's Münsterplatz during Fair Trade Week for several years. In the years 2014 to 2019, this was "Rundum Fair", a fair breakfast combined with a fair fashion show. In 2020, the event format "Bonn - Rundum Nachhaltig" brought together the topics of fair, organic and regional for the first time.

Fair week

Fair trade works in many directions. It creates future prospects for producers and their families, and as an international movement it is actively committed to social change.

In Bonn, numerous initiatives, organizations, companies and many committed citizens take part in Fair Trade Week every September. They all want to show what fair trade means to them and why they believe in fairly traded products. The activities on offer are diverse and range from lectures, tastings and sales campaigns to the presentation of fair trade products in shop windows, special lessons in schools, devotions in churches and much more.
