City of Bonn

A further 2.7 million in funding for the Inner City Bonn 2.0 master plan

On 24 April 2025, the Ministry of Home Affairs, Municipal Affairs, Building and Digitalization of North Rhine-Westphalia announced that the city of Bonn will receive a further grant of 2.7 million euros to implement the individual projects of the Innere Stadt Bonn 2.0 master plan. The city of Bonn has thus received a total of more than 26 million euros in funding for the years 2021 to 2025 to implement the individual projects of the Innere Stadt Bonn 2.0 master plan.

"The commitment to the very high level of funding from both the state and the federal government underlines that we are taking the right measures with our projects to adapt our inner-city spaces to the consequences of the climate crisis through unsealing and greening," says Mayor of Bonn Katja Dörner. "I am delighted that the urban development funding is helping us to continue to develop Bonn in a sustainable and liveable way."

City planning officer Helmut Wiesner comments: "The repeated success of our applications for urban development funding enables us to consistently continue the important construction projects for urban upgrading and climate adaptation in the inner city. This is also good for increasing the attractiveness of our inner city.

By submitting the basic funding application for the Inner City Bonn 2.0 master plan on September 30, 2020, the city of Bonn applied for funding for urban development projects with a five-year term from 2021 to 2025 in the amount of more than 34 million euros (eligible expenditure). Within the funding period 2.0 (2021 to 2025), the detailed annual applications for the specific implementation of the individual projects were submitted each year. For the years 2021-2024, over 23.6 million euros have already been approved with a funding rate of up to 80 percent (2021: three million euros, 2022: 4.1 million euros, 2023: 8.3 million euros and 2024: 8.2 million euros).

The first projects have been successfully launched and implemented in recent years. The "Inner City Management" in the Pavilion for Building Culture, including the "Disposition Fund", has been successfully set up and firmly established. The adjacent "Budafokpark" was opened in summer 2023 and has enjoyed great popularity ever since. The project "Redesigning subway exits - art at the main station" was also successfully opened with the conversion of the subway exits on Thomas-Mann-Straße on Urban Development Day in May 2024. Many other projects are already underway, such as the extensive redesign of the Rhine embankment promenade.

The transformation of the green space at the Windeckbunker into Budafok Park is one of the projects in the Innere Stadt 2.0 master plan.
