Pay more attention to homeless people in cold weather

In view of the frosty temperatures, the city of Bonn is calling on citizens to pay particular attention to people in need and to call for help in an emergency.

When it's cold, life on the streets becomes a double struggle for survival for homeless people. Every night spent in the open air carries risks, including death from hypothermia. Information about homeless people in need of help can be obtained from the police and the hotline of the municipal public order service on 0228 - 77 33 33 (Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 1 a.m. and on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 10 a.m. to 1 a.m.).

Both the municipal public order service and the GABI police are currently paying particular attention to homeless people. They are approached, asked about their condition and advised of accommodation options. If necessary, they are also offered additional blankets and sleeping bags.

Homeless people in Bonn receive support from the street workers of Caritas and the Verein für Gefährdetenhilfe (VFG). The latter runs the Haus Sebastian emergency shelter for homeless people at Sebastianstraße 131 on behalf of the City of Bonn. Homeless men can also find accommodation in the Caritas Association's Prälat-Schleich-Haus in Thomasstraße. They can come here around the clock. The city administration also has its own accommodation to provide sufficient space.

Admission to Haus Sebastian is only possible with an assignment. This is issued by the Office for Social Affairs and Housing of the Federal City of Bonn, Stadthaus, Berliner Platz 2, Floor 3C, Monday to Friday from 8 am to 1 pm. Those affected should first report to the information desk in the Stadthaus. Outside of these hours, those in need can obtain a referral at the Gemeinsame Anlaufstelle Bonn Innenstadt (Wache GABI) in Bonn city center, Münsterstraße 18.
